Keeping Skills Sharp in the Water
Helping Swimmers Stay Confident in the Water
After completing a Self-Rescue course, many families ask what comes next. Some swimmers continue with regular maintenance lessons to keep their skills strong and their confidence growing. Others may return after some time away and benefit from a short refresher course to rebuild comfort in the water and strengthen skills as they grow. At Swim Gym, we offer both options and are happy to help guide you toward the best path for your swimmer.
Refresher & Maintenance Courses
Maintenance and Refresher Lessons are designed for swimmers who have already completed their Self-Rescue course and want to keep their skills strong as they grow. Some children benefit from ongoing maintenance lessons to continue practicing and building endurance, while others may return for a short refresher to rebuild confidence and restore strong swim-float-swim responses.
Each lesson is individualized and responsive to what your child needs that day. We begin by confirming that your child’s core self-rescue skills are still strong and effective. From there, lessons may focus on reinforcing safe habits, improving body position and coordination, building endurance through multiple swim-float-swim sequences, or introducing basic stroke skills when a swimmer is developmentally ready.
For children who need a refresher, students typically attend 10-minute lessons Monday through Thursday, with most refresher courses lasting about 2–3 weeks. Younger swimmers, especially ages 1–4, may benefit from a refresher about every six months, as rapid growth and developmental changes can affect swim and float skills.
As children become more confident in the water, they often begin experimenting, playing, and imitating others around them. Maintenance lessons help guide that growing confidence in a safe, structured way — strengthening skills, correcting habits early, and preserving the strong self-rescue foundation your child has already built.
Please be aware that missed classes are not refundable.

What’s the Difference?
Maintenance Lessons
Maintenance lessons are for children who are fully skilled, confident, and currently strong in their self-rescue abilities. These lessons are designed to help swimmers continue structured practice, maintain safe habits, and build on the skills they already have.
Maintenance is the next step immediately after completing an ISR Self-Rescue, Float, Swim-Float-Swim, or Refresher course. To be most effective, children should roll directly into maintenance without a gap in scheduling.
Like Self-Rescue lessons, maintenance lessons are one-on-one and 10 minutes long, but they are not needed daily. Most swimmers attend once or twice per week, depending on the child’s needs and the family’s goals.
Refresher Courses
Refresher courses are for children who have completed a Self-Rescue course in the past but are now rusty, less confident, or showing changes in their swimming or floating skills.
A refresher is a condensed version of the initial course and is designed to restore safe, effective self-rescue skills. Because young children grow rapidly — physically, cognitively, and emotionally — it is normal for their previously mastered skills to need adjustment over time. A child may not perform at the exact same level as the previous season, not because they have forgotten, but because they are learning to use those skills in a larger, stronger, and continually changing body.
Refresher lessons are scheduled Monday through Thursday for 10 minutes a day and typically last 1–3 weeks, depending on factors such as:
• How long it’s been since the child’s last session
• How often skills have been practiced at home
• Physical growth and developmental changes
• Water exposure and interference since the last lesson
